How do you micro your units while fighting?

For mid (8 units) to large sized armies, do you

1. Assign your unit's opponent by selecting yours 1 by 1 & specifying opponents 1 by 1?
2. Double click each group of your units & shift-RMclick on their opponents (no hotkeys involved)?
3. Assign hotkeys per unit type (cav, LI/FA, HI) and shift-RMclick on their opponents? How do you manage the control groups if this is your method?
4. Do you assign opponents for your cav, LI/FA or HI first?
5. Any other special things you do to micro mid-large sized armies?

This applies to a situation where you have an equal # of units as your attacker and you have to fight.

I am too lazy now. I just use shift-, and ctrl-right click. Maybe if I feel like microing I will actually throw in some hotkeys or double click on my HC to make sure they're not running into HI...but usually I couldn't be bothered to do it.

Generally I am just concerned about my cavalry first cuz they do the most damage to your opponent. One hit from an HC drops the attack of a FA or LI by 1/3 (since one of the three units dies). In small battles it's important to kill your opponent's archers because then nothing will be able to stop your HIs.

Just control by double-click the same type of unit. If I want to move the whole army but not sieges, I select the whole army then ctrl-shift (I think) the sieges to un-select them.

In close Enlightenment battle, I first withdraw HC to the flank, then double-click all LI and shift-right click on HI, double-click HI and shift-right click on HC, and after enemy's HI are pretty much dead, flank LI with HC. Some of the units maybe controlled individually.

If I have one big army and I'm on the offensive, I split it up into control groups, then always bring my archers up front, HI behind, and HC behind or to the side until most of the enemy HI are gone (as is becoming standard procedure in RoN).

Assuming that both players have a reasonable ammount of HI and they keep them back, the player who wins the battle is the player whose archers/GPI overpowers that of the enemy.

kinda depends on who's attacking or defending...if its an assault then I do the same as bird, but I allso
set the siege to the side so I can use them afterwards..and I most often just micro my archers cuz after u kill your opponents HI then u can just kill the rest with HC...but included to that I often send some HA to diferent cities meanwhile, cuz the opponent reacts slower and u get to ruin his economy D

if its defending then I put my HI inside and micro archers in and out of the city to kill his HI...and I most often go around him with HC and maybe some spys to kill siege and archers

You are SOOO BAD! shock

I have control group 1 & everything joins it except spies. Once army reaches certain size it forms sub-groups in my interface. Then I get whole army attacking if I want horses I click on them if I want to attack without horses I ctrl-click on them, same with seige. Select 1 click on seige and tell em what to do...

When I remember I subgroup so everything is group 1, cav is group 1 and 2, seige group 1 and 3.

Spies and navy always get a number.

For selecting entire army if not given a ctrl group i use shift ,

Home gives me every unit of one type or every building of 1 type (annoying it recognises different sized cities as different buildings)

I drag select a lot keeping army moving while parts of it are off screen doing other things. That is one downfall of ctrl groups, sometimes you pull things away you don't want to.

Well to select all cities just hit shift-c. Want to econ quickly? Hit shift-c v a. This makes a villie at every city and sets a rally point to the nearest resource. You'll end up with some idle vills (select them with shift-period and get them working later) but this type of econing is easily done even while you're in battle.

I do the same as bird on attack, same as sims on quick econ^^

hey if you select all your units of the same type, e.g. double click on a hoplite, and then how do you direct them to attack another units of the same type?

e.g. if you have all your arquebuisers selected, and you want them to attack their nearest possible crossbowman, normally what I do is right-click one crossbowmen. But the problem is how do you get them to attack their nearest crossbowmen so they don't all run off one single target?

Probably attack move is best for that. They'll attack the nearest unit. Besides that individually assigning them something to attack.

how do you do the attack move thing? what does attack move mean

AU_sims

26-09-2006 16:59:20

ctrl + right click...they will try to move to the right click point but if any unit is in range while walking there they will fire at the units first before moving there

yeah that works if you want to just attack the nearest unit. but more than often you want to attack the units they are best at inflicting damaged against (designed to counter), e.g heavy infantry is strong against heavy calvary. so you need to tell the units to attack the units you want them to attack individually?

yes

when you lead your army up to a city do you use your siege units to attack their barracks or their city? Attack the barracks first or the stables first?
